Hotels on Île de Ré with a Pool: How to Choose the Right One (and When to Go for a Swim)

Ile de Ré Stays

Sommaire

On Île de Ré, people come first and foremost for the ocean. Then they discover the tides that empty the beaches twice a day, the westerly wind that cools off the June afternoons, and the Atlantic water that, even in August, remains decidedly invigorating. That’s when you realize why a pool has become the top priority for many travelers when booking a hotel.

Except that “hotel with a pool” doesn’t really mean much. Is it heated or not? Is it open in April or only in July? Is it reserved for guests? And most importantly: what if you visit in November? Here are the questions to ask before booking, and the answers as they apply specifically to the island.

In a nutshell

  • On the Île de Ré, the vast majority of hotel pools are outdoor and seasonal: the issue of the operating season is more critical than that of heating.
  • You can count the number of hotels on Ré Island with a truly indoor pool that’s open year-round on one hand.
  • The heated pool at the HR Hôtel & Spa Marin in La Flotte is open from mid-April through late September, with continuous bar service by the pool.
  • During the off-season, the Spa Marin’s seawater pool, heated to over 34 °C, takes over: it’s part of the marine circuit, included with every overnight stay.
  • A pool heated to 28 °C and seawater at 34 °C serve different purposes: swimming in one, relaxing in the other.

Why the swimming pool is especially important on the Île de Ré

It’s a real paradox: an island surrounded by water where the pool becomes a reason to stay. There are three reasons for this.

The Tides. The tidal range is significant along the Atlantic coast, and some of the island’s beaches turn into the foreshore at low tide. So, when planning a swim in the ocean, you have to keep an eye on the tidal coefficient—which is charming for three days but a hassle for seven.

The water temperature. The Atlantic off the coast of Charente-Maritime doesn’t really warm up until late summer. In May, June, and as early as mid-September, going for a swim in the ocean is more of a feat than a relaxing activity.

The wind. It’s the island’s signature climate—the one that makes its light so special and its cyclists so happy. A body of water sheltered by a hedge, a wall, or a garden offers thermal comfort that’s incomparable to that of an exposed beach.

The result: on the Île de Ré, a swimming pool doesn’t replace the sea—it complements it. It allows people to swim when the sea doesn’t, and it provides a backup on days when plans are disrupted by the weather or tide schedules.

Also check the admission policy for children: some establishments have a minimum age requirement or designated time slots.

5 Questions to Ask Before Booking

Hotel listings and booking platforms all display the same “pool” icon. It can actually refer to very different situations. Here’s what you need to check, in this order.

1. What are the exact opening hours?

This is the most important question—and by far the one most often overlooked. On Île de Ré, hotel pools generally open in the spring and close in the fall, but the dates vary widely from one hotel to another: some don’t open until June, while others stay open until the end of October.

If you book a stay in April, May, or October, this date makes all the difference. Be sure to ask for it specifically by phone or email, and be wary of listings on booking aggregators, which are often out of sync with the hotel’s information. A two-week discrepancy between two sources is not at all unusual.

2. Is the pool heated—and to what temperature?

“Heated” is a non-standardized term. On the island, heated pools are usually kept at around 27 to 28 °C, which makes for a comfortable swim. Some hotels specify that heating depends on weather conditions: in practice, this means that a cold spring may delay when the pools are heated.

The right approach: Ask about the target temperature, not just whether a heating system is present.

3. Outdoors, under a roof, or indoors?

This is what truly sets the island’s hotels apart. Almost all of the island’s hotel pools are outdoor. Indoor pools, which are accessible regardless of the weather, are rare—and are mainly found in hotels with a wellness area or a thalassotherapy center.

There’s one important detail to note: at several of the island’s spa hotels, what’s offered during the off-season isn’t an indoor pool, but a heated seawater pool that’s part of the wellness program. The purpose is different—you don’t swim laps in it—but it fulfills the same desire to take a dip when the sky is gray.

4. Is access restricted to hotel guests?

On an island that gets very crowded in the summer, this issue has a direct impact on comfort. A pool reserved for residents remains quiet even in the middle of August; a pool open to the general public—or one attached to a restaurant or spa—can be significantly livelier.

5. What services are available at the pool?

A pool without shaded lounge chairs, without a food service area, and without towels provided quickly becomes nothing more than a rectangle of water. The elements that make all the difference over the course of a full day: plenty of lounge chairs and umbrellas, continuous bar service, a light menu in the afternoon, and access to restrooms from outside.

Heated pool or saltwater pool: two distinct experiences

Confusion often arises at the time of booking, even though the two types of equipment are not used for the same purpose.

The heated pool is a place to enjoy both day trips and vacations. People swim there, take their children there, and spend the afternoon there between a bike ride and dinner. Its temperature, around 28 °C, allows for vigorous swimming and extended sessions.

The heated seawater pool is part of the treatment experience. Warmer—over 34 °C—and fed with seawater for its remineralizing properties, it is part of a treatment circuit that typically combines a jacuzzi, steam room, sauna, and sensory showers. You remain still in it, allowing yourself to relax and recover. It is this feature that makes a seaside getaway in November a well-rounded experience.

A hotel that offers both year-round. That’s exactly what the HR Hotel & Spa Marin is like.

The heated pool at the HR Hôtel & Spa Marin in La Flotte

Overlooking the ocean, just a few steps from Arnerault Beach, the HR’s heated outdoor pool is part of a space designed for a full day of relaxation: lounge chairs, umbrellas for shade, and a setting that opens out onto the sea.

In practical terms:

  • Heated outdoor pool, open from mid-April through the end of September
  • Beach chairs and umbrellas scattered around the pool
  • Continuous bar service by the pool, and a limited restaurant menu from 2:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • Access restricted to hotel guests

The little detail that makes a difference: not having to get up from your lounge chair for a late lunch or a drink at 5 p.m. The HR Beach Bar serves you right by the pool.

A complete list of the hotel’s amenities is provided on the 5-Star Services page—including a swimming pool, concierge service, bike rentals, private parking, and pet-friendly accommodations.

Swimming Out of Season: The Spa Marin’s Marine Journey

HR Hotel, Restaurant, Spa, Marine, Course

That’s the answer to the question everyone who visits the island between October and April asks themselves. The hotel is open year-round, but the outdoor pool is open only during certain seasons.

The experience continues at the Spa Marin, an 800-square-meter space facing the ocean, centered around a marine circuit fed by seawater heated to over 34 °C. A Jacuzzi, steam room, sauna, cold plunge pool, and sensory showers round out the circuit, along with a relaxation room featuring a wall of Himalayan salt.

An important factor when evaluating value for money: the marine therapy session is included with each overnight stay. There is no additional charge for it, unlike at many other establishments with a wellness center.

Be careful, however, not to confuse the two facilities: the aquatic circuit is a space for relaxation and wellness, not a swimming pool. If your priority is swimming, the outdoor pool’s operating hours are the factor you should consider.

La Flotte, a starting point for exploring the rest of the island

Choosing a hotel with a pool also means choosing a base. La Flotte is located on the island’s north coast, a few minutes’ walk from the harbor and its market, and about a 20-minute drive from the bridge.

This central location avoids the main drawback of vacations on Ré: travel time. From La Flotte, the network of bike paths provides access to most of the island—Saint-Martin-de-Ré and its fortifications, the salt marshes in the north, and the beaches in the south.

Frequently asked questions

Which hotels on Île de Ré have heated pools?

Several hotels on the island offer heated outdoor pools, mainly in the 3- to 5-star categories, located in Sainte-Marie-de-Ré, Le Bois-Plage-en-Ré, Saint-Martin-de-Ré, and La Flotte. Since opening hours and water temperatures vary significantly from one hotel to another, the most reliable approach is to check directly with the hotel for your specific dates.

Are there any hotels with indoor or covered pools on the Île de Ré?

They are rare. The vast majority of the island’s hotel pools are outdoor and seasonal. Off-season alternatives can be found at establishments with a wellness center or thalassotherapy facility, which offer a heated seawater pool accessible year-round. This is the case at the HR Hôtel & Spa Marin with its marine wellness program.

Is the pool at the HR Hôtel & Spa Marin open year-round?

No. The heated outdoor pool is open from mid-April through the end of September. However, the hotel and the Spa Marin are open year-round, and the seawater pool in the marine circuit—heated to over 34 °C—is accessible in all seasons.

Is the boat tour included in the room rate?

Yes, access to the marine experience is included with each night’s stay. Treatments and massages at the Spa Marin require a separate reservation and are billed separately.

Can you swim in the ocean on Île de Ré outside of the summer?

That’s possible, but the Atlantic Ocean remains cool in the spring and early fall along this stretch of the coast. Except for July and August, a heated pool or a heated seawater pool offers a much more comfortable swimming experience.

Do you need to book a long time in advance for a hotel with a pool on Île de Ré?

For July and August, yes: the island’s hotel options are limited, and properties with pools are the first to fill up. For a stay in the spring or fall, availability is more flexible—this is also the time of year when it’s essential to check the pool’s opening dates.
